A local SEO checklist for service businesses
Published October 2026 by SERPs Globally
Most local SEO wins come from doing the basics thoroughly. Use this checklist to find what is holding your business back.
1. Complete your Google Business Profile
Choose the most accurate primary category, add secondary categories that truly apply, list your services, write a clear description, set correct hours and add real photos of your work and team. Keep it updated, because an active profile gives customers more reason to choose you.
2. Keep your business details consistent
Your name, address and phone number should match across your website, profile and directories. Fix duplicates and outdated listings, since conflicting details confuse both customers and search engines.
3. Build service and location pages
Give each core service its own page explaining what you do, who it is for and where you work. If you serve several areas, create genuinely useful pages for each one instead of copying the same text with a new town name.
4. Earn and answer reviews
Ask happy customers for a review soon after the job and make it easy with a direct link. Reply to every review politely, including critical ones.
5. Add local trust signals
Show your address or service area and any licences or accreditations that apply. Add LocalBusiness schema markup so search engines can read your details clearly.
6. Earn local links and mentions
Sponsorships, local associations, partners and local press can all link to you. A few relevant local links are worth more than many random ones.
7. Make the site fast and easy on mobile
Most local searches happen on phones. Make your phone number tap-to-call and keep your contact form short.
8. Track what matters
Watch calls, direction requests and enquiries, not just rankings. Review them monthly and adjust.
